During the summer of
2002, Stewart
Barker-Builder
took on
a complex addition & renovation project for the Town of
Jamaica
The problem : The Town of Jamaica was out of room in its Town Hall. The existing concrete records storage vault was too small. The second floor meeting room was too small and didn't allow for handicapped access. Town employees needed more office space as well. |
|
The job began with the installation of a new foundation at the back of the existing building (above, right). The work trailer and materials have been moved on-site and erection of the outside walls begins (right). The shingled roof pictured will be removed once the new roof structure is installed over it. |
|
Work continues as the new building is tied into the old one. One of the many challenges was reconciling the new structure, built level, plumb and square, with the old, which had moved and shifted with time. |
|
Here, work has begun on the new addition to the vault. The old exterior walls of the building have been removed, and are being supported by temporary braces. The concrete forms are in place and a hole has been cut in the front of the building to allow the concrete to be poured. After the vault addition is completed, the exterior wall will be rebuilt and re-sided, and a doorway will be cut into the existing concrete vault to connect the two. |
|
The building, the roof and the new vault are finished. The protective roof over the new entrance has been installed. It's just down to the interior finish details now, as the job begins to wrap up. |
|
Here are two views of the east end of the building, inside and out, which houses the new cathedral ceilinged meeting room. |
